War

from Geardagum by Karmic Ashes

about

No lengthy explanation needed given the title, and although I imagined this as ancient/medieval warfare of a mythical type, I believe that war only changes with respect to man's efficiency at carrying it out and the scale of horror it creates, as evidenced by the egregious wars of the twentieth century. The ending lines characterize a half-shamanic, half-Faustian resurrection, metaphorically framing the warrior and war as eternal and unspecific; soldiers wear many masks, wave many flags, and fight for many causes, yet all return to death, and more always arise to take their place, bearing kingdoms on their backs.

lyrics

Shield and blade
My brothers crossed the field
Steel rang out, hallowed song to the earth
The legacy of my will shall persist
Hanging over cross-timbered worlds
Breathing out the life that I once held so close
Out there, betwixt the sun and the moon
All those years etched out in bone
The world-terror, drowned in blood
As humanity toppled from the throne
Living darkness shattered the ancient covenant
No more options
I took his wager so far down beneath the roots
The sky returned to my waking eyes
Vision stained by blood
The cycle of death continues . . .
